Rory's Dance

Synopsis

Rory and Dean go to Chilton dance. Tristan gets in Dean's face. Rory and Dean accidentally fall asleep overnight at Miss Patty's, which causes Lorelai and Emily to panic.

Plot outline

Emily trumps Lorelai at Friday night dinner by knowing about Rory's upcoming winter dance. Rory announces afterward that she doesn't think she wants to go. Lorelai asks her if she's not going because she really doesn't want to, or just because she's scared and shy.

Rory worries about asking Dean to the dance, and about whether or not Dean is her boyfriend or not. Then she convinces Dean to go to the dance with her, even though he's not very excited about the Chilton function.

Dean: Are you asking me to go to a dance with you?
Rory: No...Yes.

Lorelai is hard at work making Rory's dress for the dance when she falls and hurts her back, causing a ton of pain and some back spasms, which lands her on the couch for the remainder of the episode.

On the night of the dance, Emily comes over to the house to see Rory off to the dance, and insists that Rory wait for Dean to come to the door to get her. After Dean and Rory leave for the dance, Emily stays to look after Lorelai and make sure that her back is OK and that she can eat. Emily makes her a banana on toast, which she insists Lorelai liked when she was a kid. They both decide it's gross once Emily tastes it.

Rory and Dean head to the dance, where Rory starts reconsidering whether they should be there because Tristan has been harassing and flirting with her for the last few weeks. But once they arrive at the dance, Rory's classmates see Dean and Rory getting close. Madeline and Louise step in to find out if Dean and Rory are dating, and Dean pushes them away by snuggling with Rory.

Tristan watches Rory and Dean jealously, and then he ends up starting a fight with Dean. They shove each other and then Rory and Dean leave. They still have time, so they get a cup of coffee back in Stars Hollow. Then, while walking around, Rory asks Dean if he is her boyfriend. They agree, it's official. They they settle down in Miss Patty's with a book. Before long, they're both sound asleep.

The next morning, Miss Patty and her yoga class find the two of them asleep on bean bag chairs, and Rory freaks out and runs home. Emily awakens Lorelai at 5:30 a.m. when she realizes that Rory didn't come home. Both Emily and Lorelai panic, until Miss Patty calls to tell her Rory is on her way home. Emily attacks Lorelai, telling her that Rory is turning out just like Lorelai.

Emily: She's going to ruin everything just like you ruined everything.
Lorelai: No, she's not! No, she's not! No she's not!

As soon as Emily leaves, Lorelai turns on Rory. Then Rory tells Lorelai that she is only mad because Emily saw her screw up.
