Synopsis

Paris' parents are going through a nasty divorce, and it's the talk of the school. When she sees Max and Lorelai kiss passionately at Parent's Day, Paris spreads the news to the rest of the school to take the heat off herself.

Plot outline

Max and Lorelai's relationship is heating up, and Lorelai comes home late one night. Rory tells her she looks happy.
At Friday night dinner, Emily brings up "Parents Day" at Chilton. Lorelai didn't know about it, so Emily gloats that she knows all the Chilton news before Lorelai does. Lorelai declares that she is going to go to "Parents Day."
Rory and Max have an awkward interaction when Max comes to pick up Lorelai for a date, and they talk about trying to not be awkward during their times after school.

Lorelai: It's 8 o'clock. Who shows up at 8 o'clock for an 8 o'clock date?
Rory: I don't know, maybe a Chilton teacher?

Sookie and Jackson argue over a new hybrid vegetable, and Lorelai and Rory meet Sookie for lunch at Luke's. Rory suggests that she and Lorelai invite Max to come skating with them and Lorelai starts to panic - Rory seems to be getting attached to Max, and that worries her.
Later, Sookie and Lorelai talk about Max and Lorelai says he's a great guy, "for someone else." Lorelai gets defensive and tells Sookie she has no room to talk, because she hasn't been in a relationship in years. Then she realizes she has been a jerk and apologizes.
The word around Chilton is that Paris' parents are going through a major divorce, with the detais splattered all over the newspapers. Rory feels bad for what she's going through. Lorelai tries to get out of going to "Parents Day" at Chilton, because she doesn't want to see Max. Rory calls her out on it, and Lorelai admits that she is breaking up with Max, and ends up coming to "Parents Day."
After his class on "Parents Day," Lorelai sticks around to break up with Max. Instead, he convinces her that they can't break up and they share a steamy kiss that Paris sees through the window and spreads it all around the school.
Rory gets angry at Lorelai for kissing Max during school, now that everyone knows. Lorelai tells her that the rules she has for their family and keeping men out are for Rory's own good.
At Friday night dinner, Rory and Lorelai call a truce for the dinner, but Emily already knows that Lorelai was spotted kissing Mr. Medina. She is furious, and yells at her.

Emily: Kissing a teacher? In a classroom? On Parents Day?
Lorelai: Well, they wanted us to get more involved with the school.

Rory talks to Paris about how she should know what it's like to have stories spread around about her. They make a little bit of progress. Sookie asks Jackson out to dinner, and he says he'd like to. And then Lorelai meets up with Max at a coffee shop, and explains how she got freaked out because Rory was getting too attached to him. She apologizes for freaking out, and Max tells her that the Headmaster has scolded him and by dating Lorelai, he is jeopardizing his job. He tells Lorelai they need to take some time apart.
Rory comes home that night to find Lorelai in bed, crying. They sit together.
