Max Medina taught one of Rory's English classes while she was at Chilton, during which time he also came to date Lorelai. Lorelai and Max eventually get engaged. After being left at the altar, Max leaves for California, ostensibly to do some teaching at Berkeley. He later returns to Chilton. After his return, he has a couple of awkward encounters with Lorelai, before ultimately vanishing from her life.
